Mowing Grass Best Practices

I will give you 5 tips, to keep your lawn lush and prevent weeds and moss from invading.

Oregon is a bit special when it comes to yard care. It can be harder to stop things from growing than it is to grow something.

Crab grass and weeds can take over your tidy garden beds and even creep their way into you lawn.

Here are 5 ways you can help make your lawn the best on the block:

1. Correct the pH. Crab grass and other weeds thrive in acidic soils. Rhododendrons love it too.

• 2. Deep watering. Experts agree early morning, before the harsh rays start shining, is best. There are battery operated timers available. Give it a good full soak first thing in the AM.

• 3. Cut it often, but only a little bit. Weekly mowing will get dandelions before they go to seed. For the healthiest lawn, never cut more than 1/3 of the grass height at one time.

• 4. Leave the clippings on the lawn. The grass clipping act as a natural fertilizer. It gives back to the soil what it needs to grown. Mowing only a little at a time should prevent unsightly clods of grass clippings from choking out the new grass.

5. Cut weeds off before they start. In areas like garden beds or gravel driveways, where you want to prevent grass and weeds from creeping in, cut it off by deep edging around those areas. Once a month would be plenty to stop the underground crab grass runners from reaching your garden or driveway.
